Don Ovesen Pickerill died at his home on May 25, 2026. He was born in Lebanon, Ky on December 22, 1932.

Don was a reserved man unless you were talking about race horses. At one time he invested in horse ownership but decided that was too large of an undertaking and chose the spectator side of the industry. Don took pride in taking multiple of his nieces and nephews to the track and giving lessons on the ins and outs of racing. He felt it was important they knew how to read the racing form.

Don was married to the late Elizabeth Ballard Pickerill in September, 1961. She passed away on March 15, 2025. He is the son of the late Virgil Morrison and Marie Ovesen Pickerill. He had seven brothers and sisters. Winifred Pickerill Crawford, Louisville, and Mary Sue Pickerill Schooler, Atlanta, survive him. Those siblings preceding him in death are August Alfred “Sonny” Pickerill, Charles Morrison Pickerill, Jacob Weber Pickerill, Dorothy Mildred Pickerill Netherland, and Rebecca Pickerill. Nine nieces and nephews also survive him, along with numerous great nieces and nephews who will never get the “Racing Form” lesson from their great uncle.

Mr. Pickerill graduated from Lebanon High School in 1950, and went on to the Bowling Green Business University. After receiving his Bachelor of Science in Commerce degree in 1954, he joined the US Army as an intelligence officer stationed in Japan during the Korean War. After his military service Mr. Pickerill went to work for the United States Treasury as a National Bank Examiner for the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. Upon his retirement from the OCC in 1985 he joined the Professional Bank Services where he was a key participant in the early years. This business provided consulting services for banks in the United States. He was highly regarded in the banking industry across the Commonwealth. In his true retirement years, he volunteered with AARP to provide income tax preparation.
