October 27, 1947 – March 29, 2021
Gracie Irene Carter, age 73 of Bardstown, passed away Monday, March 29, 2021 at Hospice Inpatient Care Center in Louisville. Born October 27, 1947 in Marion County, she was a 33-year employee of GE Appliance Park where she worked as a line coordinator. During her last five years of employment there, she also worked at Loretto Foodland. Irene enjoyed crocheting, sewing, making jewelry, and spending time with family and friends. She gave freely of her time as treasurer of the New Hope Fire Department Board on which she served for fifteen years, and as a St. Vincent de Paul Church Food Planner for three years. She served St. Vincent de Paul church, (and in later years, St. Thomas Church) in many capacities, including assisting with picnics and socials and any other way she could be of help. Irene was a talented musician and song writer, and a published poet.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Oldren Aloysious and Mary Evelyn Mattingly; three siblings, William Albert Mattingly and infants Mary Jean Mattingly and Louis Bertrand Mattingly.
Survivors include three sons, Todd Nalley of Bardstown, Chris Nalley of Campbellsville and Greg Nalley of Dant Station; her life partner, Harold Dunn of Shepherdsville; two stepchildren, James and Kim Carter, both of Shepherdsville; a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren; two sisters, Doris Ulrich (Bobby) of New Haven and Linda Mattingly of New Hope; one brother, Larry Mattingly (Fonda) of Marion.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM Tuesday, April 6, 2021 at Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 104 Church Street, New Hope. Revs. Jason Harris and Ken Fortner will concelebrate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 3-8 PM Monday at Mattingly Funeral Home, 195 Holy Cross Road, Loretto, with a prayer service at 7 PM by Deacon Sam Filiatreau.
Pallbearers are Doug Mattingly, Joe Paul O'Bryan, Stephen Hutchins, Donald Nichols, Corey Miles and Bruce Nalley.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the funeral home is limited to 60 % occupancy, face coverings are required, and food or drink are prohibited. The services will be livestreamed onto the Mattingly Funeral Home facebook page.
