James Roger Hughes, Sr.

James Roger Hughes, Sr., 82, of Raywick, passed away Sunday, September 6, 2026, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born June 16, 1944, in Marion County. Roger retired from General Electric after 33 years of dedicated employment.

He was an avid collector and treasure hunter who enjoyed attending auctions, flea markets, and yard sales. Roger could fix just about anything and was always willing to help anyone in need. He was a faithful member of Saint Charles Catholic Church.

Roger was preceded in death by his wife, Clara Jeanette Mattingly Hughes who died December 6, 2016; his parents, Louis and Celeste Costello Hughes; three brothers, Don, Mack, and Mike Hughes; two sisters, Dorothy Williams and Marg LaFollett; two great grandchildren, Tanner Strong and Bryleigh Marie Clark.

Survivors include four children, Janelle O’Daniel (Mike) of Lebanon, James Hughes (Deanna), Doug Hughes (Cheri) of Union, and Robin Oliver (Gene) of Lebanon; nine grandchildren, Lindsay Strong (Joe), Devin O’Daniel (Alex), Seth Hughes (Hali), Chase Hughes (Breanna), Luke Hughes, Katy Thomas, Anne Claire Gaskin (Joey), Mary Beth Thomas (Joe), and Courtnee Bickers (Zach); nine great grandchildren, Hayden Strong, Cash Strong, Bentley Strong, Miller Strong, Owen O’Daniel, Sylvie Hughes, Adaline Hughes, Nolyn Clark, and Maycen Clark; two sisters, Judy Morris (Alvin) and Debbie Wheatley; five brothers, Kenny (Sally), Richard (Tina), Jerry (Adaline), Stevie (Elaine), and Tommy (Brenda).

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 108 Main Street, Raywick. Very Rev. Scott J. Wimsett, V.F. will officiate. Interment will follow in Saint Francis Xavier Cemetery.

The visitation is 4-8 pm Friday at Mattingly Funeral Home, 195 Holy Cross Road, Loretto, with a prayer service at 7 pm by Rev. Deacon Joseph R. Dant.

Pallbearers are grandsons and Honorary pallbearers are granddaughters.

Memorials may go to Marion County Good Samaritans Foundation or Hospice Health Green River.
