James Edward "Jim" Browning, 81, of Lebanon, passed away on Sunday, January 11, 2026, at his home. Born on September 18, 1944, in Marion County, he was a retired employee of Nally & Haydon in Springfield. He enjoyed raising his garden and restoring antique tractors. He was a devoted husband and father who loved his grand and great grandchildren.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph William and Addie Florence Abell Browning; one sister, Carolyn Irene Browning.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Margaret Lee "Peggy" Hayden Browning; four children, Fran Fields (Rick) of Springfield, Amy Browning and Lori Caldwell (Greg), and Jamie Browning, all of Lebanon; seven grandchildren, Adam Fields, Amber Spaulding, Tiffany Brockman, Alexis Browning, Gabrielle Browning, Cameron Cubert, and Kylie Browning; nine great grandchildren; three brothers, Fred Browning, John Browning (Mary Ann), and Kenny Browning (Jeannie); three sisters, Susan Skees, Sr. Frances Browning, Barbara Oesterritter (Bo), and Mary Lou Mattingly.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am Friday, January 16, 2026, at Saint Charles Catholic Church, 675 Highway 327, Lebanon. The Most Rev. William Francis Medley and The Very Rev. Scott J. Wimsett, V.F. will concelebrate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The visitation is 4-8 pm Thursday at Mattingly Funeral Home, 195 Holy Cross Road, Loretto, with a prayer service at 7 pm by Rev. Deacon Joseph R. Dant.
Pallbearers are Wayne Browning, Pat Browning, Jeff Hamilton, Billy Hamilton, Jimmy Yates, Frankie Flanagan, Michael Hicks, and Brian Mattingly; Honorary Pallbearers are Tony Browning, Todd Browning, Nick Browning, Matthew Browning, Joe Skees, Paul Oesterritter, and Jason Mattingly.
