Joan Marie Higdon Mattingly, age 83 of Saint Francis, passed away Sunday, November 24, 2024 at Norton Women's and Children's Hospital in Louisville. She was born April 2, 1941 in New Haven. She founded the Community Farm Alliance and was awarded the Peace and Justice award for her work there. She also founded the Father's Rights group. She was a member of Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Francis Arvil and Mary Catherine Smith Higdon; her stepmother, Valeria Medley Higdon; three sisters, Maria Goretti Higdon, Mary Evelyn Grindle, and Patricia J. Barnes; five brothers, John Henry Higdon, James Marion "Jimmy" Higdon, Rev. Francis B. Higdon, M.M., Joseph Donald Higdon, and Paul Vincent Higdon.
Survivors include her husband, Francis L. "Tootle" Mattingly; seven children, Richie Mattingly (Tina) of Bradfordsville, Gina Garrett of Lebanon, Russell Mattingly (Becky) of Saint Joe, Kerry Mattingly (Gloria) of Springfield, Craig Mattingly (Jackie) of Loretto, Becca Hamilton (Curtis) of Fredricktown, and Dale Mattingly of Saint Francis; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; one sister, Norma Lindgren of Winter Haven, Florida; four brothers, Charles William Higdon (Norma) of Pickerington, Ohio, Francis Arvil Higdon, Jr. (Barbara) of Euless, Texas, William Anthony Higdon (Sue) of Texas, and Thomas Wayne Higdon (Nancy) of Tacoma, Washington; three sisters-in-law, Joanne Higdon of Tucson, Arizona, Debbie Higdon of Winter Haven, Florida and Janice Higdon of Louisville; one brother-in-law, Richard Grindle of South Carolina.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Joan Marie Mattingly will be celebrated at 10 am Wednesday, November 27, 2024 at Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 6785 Highway 52, Loretto. Rev. Richard Goodin will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The visitation is 3-8 pm Tuesday at Mattingly Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7 pm by Rev. Deacon Joseph R. Dant.
