Joseph Carroll "Joe" Downs, 77, of Raywick, passed away Saturday, September 3, 2011 at Cedars of Lebanon Nursing Center, Lebanon, after battling cancer.
Joe was born on June 23, 1934 in Raywick to the late Anna Lee Gribbins Downs and Thomas Hayes Downs. He was raised in a large, close knit family on their farm in Raywick. On February 17, 1953, Joe entered the U.S. Marine Corps along with his brother, Tommy. He worked most of his life as a truck driver. On June 1, 1957, Joe married his sweetheart, Ann Janette Troxell, who went on to become the devoted mother of his four children. She passed away on August 6, 2004. Joe was a fun loving young man with a great sense of humor; characteristics that were true to him throughout his life. He put smiles on many faces and brought about the joy of laughter on innumerable occasions.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Diane Downs, two sons, Joey and Chris Downs, one granddaughter, Allison Hamilton, two brothers, Charlie and infant William Robert Downs.
Survivors include a daughter, Lisa Marie Downs of New Haven, a grandson, Christopher Derek Downs of Lebanon, four sisters, Ann Fowler and Mary Lou Bright (David) all of Louisville, Theresa Thomas (Jimmy) of Raywick, Rose Mills (Mike) of Mount Washington, two brothers, Tommy Downs (Lou) of Howardstown and Jimmy Downs of Raywick, his companion of many years, Lucille McElfresh of Raywick, one Aunt, Aline Hornlein of Los Angeles, CA, one sister-in-law, Margaret Downs of Raywick, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 AM Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Raywick with interment in the church cemetery. Rev. James W. Graf will be the celebrant. Military Rites will be conducted at the cemetery by the Marion County Veterans Honor Guard. Visiting is 3-8 PM Tuesday with a prayer service at 6 PM with Rev. Deacon Joseph R. Dant.
