Joseph Lawrence 'Larry' Elder, age 86 of Loretto, a devoted husband, loving father, cherished grandfather, and a steadfast man of faith, passed away peacefully on March 24, 2025, surrounded by his beloved family. Larry was the embodiment of kindness, hard work and humility, who found great joy living on his family farm for the majority of his life. Known for his quiet demeanor, unwavering character, and deep devotion, he leaves behind a legacy of love and faith.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Bert and Dorothy Elder, as well as his siblings Randall Elder and Sue Lee. He is survived by his sister, Lucretia Thomas.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Mary Catherine Elder. Together, they built a family that was his pride and joy. Larry was a devoted father to Chad (Karen), Rob (Belinthia), and Josh (Kim), and a treasured grandfather to Callie, Ryann, Meritt, Wilson, Lawson, Crawford, Harper, and Sage.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am Friday, March 28, 2025, at Saint Charles Catholic Church, 675 Highway 327, Lebanon. The Very Rev. Scott J. Wimsett, V.F. will officiate. Interment will follow in the Lebanon National Cemetery where military rites will be conducted by the Marion County Veterans Honor Guard.
The visitation will be 4-8 pm Thursday at Mattingly Funeral Home, 195 Holy Cross Road, Loretto, with a prayer service at 7 pm by Rev. Deacon Joseph R. Dant.
His nephews will serve as pallbearers and include Richard Elder, Dennis Elder, Matt Thomas, Jody Raley, Charlie Spalding, and Thad Raley. His grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Larry will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by countless friends and family. His spirit lives on in the hearts of his loved ones, and his legacy of love and kindness will continue to shine brightly. May he rest in eternal peace.
