May 25, 1944 – February 3, 2021
James Newton Luckett, Sr, age 76, of Lebanon, passed away Wednesday, February 3, 2021 at Spring View Hospital in the presence of loving family. Newt was born May 25, 1944 in Marion County. He was a graduate of St. Charles High School and beloved husband to Darlene Gordon for 52 years.
Newt was a kind and gentle man who humbly gave of himself to his family and community and often worked two jobs so that he could provide his family so many wonderful opportunities. Newt was a devout Catholic who loved the Lord, his family and friends, cheering on his kids and grandkids in their many activities and sports, and the Los Angeles Dodgers. He served in the Army National Guard for 6 years and was a proud member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels. Newt was an employee of Angell Manufacturing for 37 years, Marion County Jailer for 12 years and continued working at the detention center for 17 more years as well as serving as a Marion County school bus driver.
Newt was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Lucy (Spalding) Luckett; brother, Ed Luckett; sisters Theresa Dobbings, Gertrude Brady and Millie Ewing.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene Gordon Luckett; three children, James ("Jim") N. Luckett, Jr. of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Mark Luckett (Stephanie) of Owensboro, KY, and Ann Nesmith (Peter) of Prospect, KY; six grandchildren, Grant, Kara Bane and Jenna Luckett, Katelyn and Conner Nesmith, and soon to be born granddaughter Nesmith. Newt also is survived by three brothers, Vernon Luckett of Louisville, Pat Luckett of Louisville, and Mike Luckett of Columbus, OH, as well as several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 PM Monday at Saint Augustine Catholic Church, 235 S. Spalding Avenue, Lebanon. Rev. Terry Bradshaw will officiate. Cremation will follow the service.
Visitation is 3-8 PM Sunday at Mattingly Funeral Home, 195 Holy Cross Road, Loretto, with a prayer service at 7 PM by Rev. Deacon Joseph R. Dant.
Donations in Newt's memory may go to St. Augustine Church, 235 S. Spalding Ave., Lebanon, KY, 40033 or to the Kentucky Colonel Good Works Program, online at www.kycolonels.org or mail to 943 S. First Street, Louisville, KY 40203 with a designation of "in memory of James N. Luckett, Sr."
Pallbearers are his nephews, Barry Brady, Wally Brady, Jeff Luckett, Chris C. Luckett, Christopher M. Luckett, and Ryan Ewing. Honorary Pallbearers are his former co-workers from Marion County Detention Center and the Marion County Bus Garage.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the funeral home is limited to 50% occupancy. Face coverings are required, and food and drink are prohibited.
