Obituary

Robert K."Bobby" Mattingly, also known as "Little John", age 76 of Loretto, passed away Sunday, June 8, 2014 at his home surrounded by family.

Bobby was a 16-year survivor of prostate cancer. He was born in Loretto on Feb. 17, 1938. Bobby graduated from St. Francis High School and spent two years in the Army, serving at Fort Knox, Ky., Fort Leonardwood, Mo., Fort Carson, Col., and Fort Campbell, Ky.

Bobby retired from Four Roses Distillery in Cox's Creek in 1998, and also worked for Dean's Milk Company. He was an avid baseball and softball player, earning his "Little John" nickname after baseball's great Johnny Mize. He faithfully followed the Cats and the Reds. Bobby excelled at growing tomatoes, playing in Buckpitch tournaments and he loved getting together with his Sportsmen's Club buddies.

Bobby was preceded in death by his wife, Janice Cissell Mattingly in 2005, his parents, Hubert and Josephine Mattingly, one brother, David Louis Mattingly and one infant sister, Rita Carol Mattingly.

Bobby, a loving father of four, is survived by his daughters, Karen Mattingly (Mark Nigro) of Berea, Diane Mattingly (Criss Helmkamp) of Elizabethtown and Joan Mattingly of Lexington, and his son, Kenneth of New Haven, three grandchildren, Kelli Mattingly of Louisville, Jonathan Foster of Lexington and Emily Nigro of Berea, eight sisters, Betty Ackermann, Carol Mattingly, and Brenda Mattingly, all of Louisville, Mary Thornberry of Brookside, New Jersey, Patsy Clements and Nancy Mattingly both of Nazareth, Rosie Bickett (Michael) of Bardstown, Lynn Hall (David) of Loretto, two brothers, Junie Mattingly (Carolyn) and Billy Mattingly (Libby) all of Loretto.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at Saint Francis of Assisi Church, 6785 Highway 52, Saint Francis, with interment in the church cemetery where military rites will be conducted by the Marion County Veterans Honor Guard. Rev. Bill Bowling will be the celebrant.

Visitation is 3-8 PM Tuesday at Mattingly Funeral Home, 195 Holy Cross Road, Loretto, with a prayer service at 6:30 PM by Rev. Deacon Joseph R. Dant.
