Sister Elizabeth "Betty" McWilliams SL, 85, died March 9, 2021, at Loretto Motherhouse in Nerinx, KY, where she had resided since 2017. Elizabeth Jane McWilliams was born Feb. 13, 1936, in Rockford, IL, the only child of Frances Marguerite "Betty" (Janes) and Francis Lloyd "Mac" McWilliams. Betty entered the Sisters of Loretto in 1953, was received into Loretto May 24, 1956, taking the religious name of Sister Marian Francis, and later returned to her baptismal name. Betty was a classroom teacher for 18 years, an innovative hospice care leader and provider for 20 years in Highland Park, IL, and Longview, WA, and served the Loretto Community in health care and administrative roles in Denver for 12 years. Betty was particularly known for her hospice work at Highland Park Hospital, whose hospice program was one of the very first in the country. Betty created some of the earliest standards of care for home hospice, and helped form one of the first medical ethics committees in the country.
