Sister Mary Denis Bruck SL, died April 1, 2021, at Loretto Motherhouse Infirmary in Nerinx, KY. She was at age 103 the eldest member of the Loretto Community and in the 78 ^th year of her commitment as a Sister of Loretto. Baptized Hedwig Isabelle, Sister Mary Denis was born Jan. 25, 1918, in Quincy, Ill., the oldest child of Mary (Schuetz) and Frank Philip Bruck, immigrants of Austria-Hungary. Both sides of the family settled in St. Louis. The Bruck family grew to include six girls. Hedwig entered the Sisters of Loretto in 1942 and was received into Loretto April 25, 1943, taking the name Sister Mary Denis. For most of her years of ministry, Mary Denis served as a teacher and principal at Loretto-staffed schools in Missouri (St. Ann, Normandy, 1946 to 1953), Colorado, Illinois, Kentucky and New Mexico. She served as coordinator of the Loretto Denver Center for 15 years. In 1990, Mary Denis began ministering in San Diego, where she worked as a secretary, research assistant and taught religious education at a junior high until her retirement in 1994. She continued her round of volunteer activities in San Diego until 2011, when she moved to the assisted-living quarters of Loretto Motherhouse Infirmary. Until her death, she kept active with visiting residents, attending the many activities at the Motherhouse, continuing her painting and watching every major sports event on TV she could. Burial took place at Loretto Motherhouse Cemetery. Mary Denis is survived by two siblings, Betty and Helen Bruck, both of St. Charles, MO. Preceding her in death were her parents and her siblings Margie Barber, Dorothy Clegg and Rosemary Steidemann.
