About Us
In The Beginning
Mattingly Funeral Home was established in 1933 by the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph H. "Hubie" & Josephine Fleig Mattingly. Joseph H. "Hubie" Mattingly was a native of Loretto. He married Josephine Johanna Fleig while serving an apprenticeship with Arch L. Heady Funeral Home in Louisville. Josephine's family operated a Bakery in the Germantown section. Newlywed and newly licensed, they moved to Loretto and acquired the homeplace that is now Mattingly Funeral Home. Their business grew as did their family.

The Second Generation
Joseph H. "Junie" Mattingly, Jr., is the oldest child of Hubie and Josephine Mattingly. Upon his return from the Army, Junie rejoined the family business. He earned licenses in Embalming, Funeral Directing and Barbering. He married Carolyn Masterson of New Haven. They now have six children, 16 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
The Third Generation
R. Alan Mattingly is the son of Junie & Carolyn Mattingly.
In 1981, Alan was presented with the "Bill Pierce" award during Mortuary College graduation ceremonies. This award is given to the student who is judged by fellow classmates to be the most representative of funeral service. The award is named for the college founder shown in the photo presenting. Additionally, Alan recieved the "Pi Sigma Eta" fraternity award for having the highest academic average. After graduating, Alan served as a Clinical Embalming Instructor for the college.
Alan earned his Funeral Director and Embalmers licenses in 1984. He works with Junie and Carolyn to continue the family traditions of providing service with dignity and compassion. He and his wife Cyndi have two sons and reside in Loretto.

The Homeplace Expansion
The land of the funeral home was previously owned by the Archdiocese of Louisville and was once considered as a possible site for the Saint Francis of Assisi Church. The late Mr. Leonard Wright acquired the land and built the home in 1913. It was purchased by the Mattingly family in 1933.
Home visitations were popular in 1933 so large facilities were not necessary. As the trend toward funeral home visitations grew, the funeral home was enlarged to accomodate. A major addition was completed in the mid 50's which include a larger parlor, preparation room, ramp entrance and indoor restroom facilities. In the 60's as business grew, another parlor was added.
Another large addition was completed in 1995. It consists of a large modern chapel, coffee lounge, restrooms and paved parking lot. The new funeral home facilities are beautifully decorated and provide a warm home-like atmosphere.
In 2012, the rear deck area was replaced with a larger covered porch to better showcase the natural scenic beauty of the area.
